https://kaisasyrjanen.com/Study-On-Beauty-Politics Study on Beauty Politics / Tutkimus kauneuden politiikasta (ongoing) Study on Beauty Politics is a long-term project about the appearance work and beauty as social phenomena.The visual research deals with the role and meaning of appearance in Western consumer culture, especially from the perspective of femininity and the expectations on supposed women. Consisting of historical and present-day documents, Study on Beauty Politics presents observations, reviews and claims in different periods, visualising the power relations in our society and the requirement to look a certain way in a certain place. Appearance is a multidimensional and contradictory entity. It is both personal and culturally shaped at the same time. It is, in all its everydayness, something that cannot be escaped from. Something with which we always bind ourselves as part of society and different groups within it. The body of work approaches appearance as a being built for the outside world.Syrjänen’s visual research is based on a photograph and a study on various documents and visual materials. By mixing artist’s own photographs and other materials into new contexts by the body of work, Syrjänen aims not only to create new narratives but also to outline the multi-threaded nature of knowledge construction. FI Tutkimus kauneuden politiikasta on monivuotinen tutkielma, teoskokonaisuus ja projekti, jonka ytimessä ovat ulkonäkötyö ja kauneus sosiaalisina ilmiöinä. Visuaalinen tutkielma käsittelee ulkonäön roolia ja merkitystä länsimaisessa kulutuskulttuurissa eritoten feminiinisyyteen ja naisoletettuihin kohdistuvien odotusten näkökulmasta. Erilaisista, historiallisista sekä nykypäivän, dokumenteista koostuva Tutkimus kauneuden politiikasta esittelee huomioita, tarkasteluja ja väittämiä erilaisissa ajanjaksoissa raottaen yhteiskuntamme valtasuhteita sekä vaadetta olla tietyn näköinen tietyssä paikassa. Ulkonäkö on moniulotteinen ja ristiriitainen kokonaisuus. Se on samanaikaisesti sekä henkilökohtaista että kulttuurisesti muotoutunutta. Se on kaikessa arkisuudessaan jotain, josta ei voi paeta. Jotain, jolla sidomme itsemme aina osaksi yhteiskuntaa ja erilaisia ryhmiä sen sisällä. Teoskokonaisuus lähestyy ulkonäköä ulkomaailmaa varten rakennettuna olemuksena. Syrjäsen visuaalinen tutkimus pohjautuu valokuvaan sekä erilaisten dokumenttien ja aineistojen läpikäyntiin. Saattamalla omia valokuvia ja muita aineistoja uusiin asiayhteyksiin teoskokonaisuuden rakentaman kontekstin sisällä Syrjänen pyrkii paitsi luomaan uusia narratiiveja myös hahmottamaan Syrjänen examines the role and significance of self presentation, particularly from the perspective of femininity and the expectations placed upon those perceived as women. The installation designed for Hippolyte Studio consists of observations, reflections, examinations, and assertions from different intersecting eras. By juxtaposing personal and collected photographs along with other materials in new contexts, Syrjänen aims to unveil power dynamics within our society and the demand to look a certain way in a specific place. A guiding thread throughout the installation is the notion of work and its relationship to appearance. “Appearance labour” is a sociological term used to describe the work put into one’s appearance. It encompasses everyday activities such as dressing up, applying makeup, adorning oneself, selecting clothing, and maintaining cleanliness. In Western consumer culture and the neoliberal mindset, appearance, like the individual in general, is often scrutinized through an economic lens. Expectations of productivity, efficiency, and respectability are projected onto the human body and its outward appearance. Citizens and individuals are expected to take sole responsibility for themselves, primarily by appearing to take care of themselves. However, employees are not compensated for the time, money, and energy invested in pre-work grooming; on the contrary, the act of dressing up consumes the worker’s time, resources, and effort. The exhibition includes a conversation between the artist and Dr. Erica Åberg, a doctorate in economic sociology and an appearance researcher. This conversation can be read as a separate text (in Finnish). Kaisa Syrjänen (born 1997) is a Helsinki-based visual artist and photographer who works within the realm of research-based art. In her works, Syrjänen combines various photographic materials, documents, and texts. She is fascinated by modes of representation and the continuous uncertainty related to the contextual nature of photographic meanings. Syrjänen is interested in the intersections between art and science, and she is inspired by questions of art’s accessibility. She graduated from the Lahti Institute of Design with a focus on photography in 2022. The artist’s work has been supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike). Zodiak – Center for New Dance and HAM have invited six artists or artist groups, selected through an open call, to work at Tennispalatsi’s HAM Corner. The residency will take place during HAM’s Dance! – Movement in the Visual Arts 1880–2020 exhibition, which depicts dance, dance-like movement, and corporeality in visual arts. Through the artists-in-residency, dance becomes a concrete part of the exhibition.Various professionals in dance and other arts will be working in the residency. In their work, the audience may find relations with the exhibition’s themes of movement and corporeality. Two-week residencies will run from 5 April to 26 June 2022. The work is coloured by an open relationship with the audience and interaction with the surrounding city space. Ham Corner provides space for artistic experiments tied in with the exhibition and interaction with the city space. Big windows make the residency space half-public, providing the audience and passers-by an opportunity to observe the artists at work. Kaisa Syrjänen’s playful photo work examines the nature and themes of discovery, searching and research. Kätkö casually combines photos, notes and observations from several eras. Pictures that have come together from different connections are decorated and tied together by a screen-printed creeper. The shape of the work has been inspired by various plant collections and archives as well as guides and maps. The choice of topics along with discovery and research reflect Kaisa Syrjänen’s work well. The artist, who often combines different photographic materials in her works, is fascinated by the form and context of the presentation of photographs, as well as the constant uncertainty they cause. In the core of Kätkö has been the connecting and interweaving factors of various substantive and concrete materials, as well as the new meanings they acquire depending on the whole. Kaisa Syrjäsen leikkisä valokuvateos tarkastelee löytämisen, etsimisen ja tutkimisen luonnetta sekä tematiikkaa. Kätkö yhdistelee rennosti valokuvia, huomioita ja havaintoja useilta aikakausilta. Erilaisista yhteyksistä yhteen päätyneitä kuvia koristaa ja nivoo yhteen silkkipainettu köynnös. Teoksen muoto on saanut inspiraatiota muun muassa erilaisista kasvikokoelmista ja -arkistoista sekä oppaista ja kartoista. Aihevalinnat löytämisen ja tutkimisen äärellä kuvastavat hyvin Kaisa Syrjäsen työskentelyä. artist Maija Viipuri. In the core of TYYPPINEN is strong friendship and curiosity about life.The collective is looking for different avenues for public speaking and making art. Among the topics that the collective has tackled are physicality, femininity, structures and the questions of care. TYYPPINEN strives to create a culture of wondering and questioning conversation around them, where is safe to not know. Tyypinen’s work has been supported by the City of Helsinki and Svenska Konstsamfundet.FI TYYPPINEN on valokuvataiteilija Kaisa Syrjäsen ja tanssitaiteilija Maija Viipurin vuonna 2019 perustama poikkitaiteellinen kollektiivi, jonka perustana on luja ystävyys ja uteliaisuus elämää kohtaan. She is fascinated by modes of representation and the continuous uncertainty related to the contextual nature of photographic meanings. Syrjänen is interested in the intersections between art and science, and she is inspired by questions of art's accessibility. She graduated from the Lahti Institute of Design with a BA focusing on photography in 2022. In addition to her personal work, Syrjänen is also a founding member of the multi-artistic collective TYYPPINEN. - Kaisa Syrjänen (s.1997) on helsinkiläinen kuvataiteilija, valokuvaaja ja journalisti, joka työskentelee tutkimuslähtöisen taiteen parissa.Syrjänen yhdistää töissään erilaisia valokuvallisia materiaaleja, dokumentteja ja tekstejä.
